the time. our own natalie morales traveled to the site of the mine. she's with us from there live tonight. hey natalie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you, brian. this is a 24-7 rescue operation with drill teams working around the clock, trying to dig tunnels to the trapped miners and officials say they're on track and making good progress for an earlier than expected rescue. nearly half mile below ground, the 33 miners are trying to get on with their subterranean existence, now in its seventh week. their lifeline till now has been a three-inch shaft bringing them delivery tubes of food, water, medicine and vitamins. they survive on a 2,500 calorie diet high in protein. to maintain some normalcy, they mimic a routine of day and night with lamps. physically, though thinner, all are reportedly in good condition. they're in good health and have no illnesses related to being under ground, says the doctor who treats them. they have been able to shower with fresh water in the mine and are even exercising with a personal trainer via a video teleconference hookup. work also keeps them

the rescue could be weeks not months away. nbc's natalie morales is outside the collapsed mine in chile. natalie, this drill they think they're getting down there, progress is being made, isn't it? >> reporter: a lot of progress being made. in fact, it is day 50 now. they've been counting down the days, they've been counting down the hours. but they've been now trapped for 50 days. three drilling teams behind me are working around the clock trying to dig that tunnel, which will then lead to their rescue. now, officials are now seemingly optimistic. they say that that rescue could actually take place now for the first week of november. but some of the families, some think that might be a little bit conservative because they've, in fact, ordered the rescue capsule that's going to help bring them up from the mine shaft to be here early next week. now, as much as there is activity here and the progress being made here, a lot of the rescue effort is involving the miners themselves. they're underground and actually helping and working in shifts to clear rock from inside the tunnel. and they a

the tunnel. none of the minors were hurt and drilling has continued. natalie morales is live at the chile and explain what happened when the drill broke off. it went stroaight into the mine where the miners are trapped. >> that is the drill bit from plan b, the drill bit operated by an american company here, center rock incorporated. the drill that did break off, one of the miners actually spotted it inside the tunnel and actually rivered the drill bit and were able to clear the way. the miners have been instrumental in helping clear rock and other things like this drill bit that fell through and, as you mentioned, xdfortunately none of the miners were in the way when that happened. i was told by plan b that they yesterday put on a new drill bit and progress continues there again today. yesterday they were already more than 300 feet into the mine. so, they're making progress there. but this is day 50 here and progress is really measured daily by how far those drills are getting into the mine shaft. you can see them working behind me, 24/7. it's a rescue operation. drill plan a, we're told

, is what they're calling it, began drilling this week. natalie morales is live and what a story this has been. what is the latest chapter you have for us, my friend? >> it certainly is, richard, an incredible story. 49 days now. if you can imagine that these 33 miners have been trapped there. meanwhile, their familiallies here continue to keep their vigil. for them a very emotional, very difficult time. but this week, finally, it seems that camp hope is offering them some new hope, as we heard a lot of progress being made. you can hear the drills going behind me. there are now three, count them three drills actively working 24/7 now to try to get those miners out, to build or to dig a tunnel that will be used as a rescue hatch. those drills are plan a, plan b and as you mentioned, richard, plan c. they have each reached successfully a couple hundred feet in depth, but they still, keep in mind, 200 feet to go. these miners are trapped a half mile below all the rock and surface here. the planned oil sea rig just went online on monday and they have already been making a lot of progress. per

they are finally rescued. natalie morales is live in copiapo, chilchile. >> three drills now working 24/7 to try to build this rescue tunnel to get to the miners. officials now say they're cautiously optimistic. they feel like they're making good headway for an earlier rescue. now, as i mentioned, there are three drills. plan "a," the drill has already made it more than halfway there. about 1,200 feet. plan "b," the drill operate bide an american company called center rock incorporated from pennsylvania, and they were actually involved in the mine rescue back in 2002. they have a lot of success already. they told me that when they heard about the condition of the miners here, they told me they had to be here to help out. they knew they could make a difference. already, they have made a difference because they were the first to get their small pilot drill bit through to the chamber where the miners were late last week. that was welcomed with much celebration here, as you can imagine. already, they're at about 300 feet. it is -- they did have a minor setback last night when their drill bit fell of

and children have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. natalie morales has the details on this. natalie, good morning. >> good morning to you, matt. yes, a civil action suit was filed wednesday by catherine jackson's attorney against aed, the concert promoter. the attorney saying the purpose of the suit is to prove the truth about what happened to michael jackson once and for all, but, again, this morning there are more questions than answers about what the singer was really going through in those final days. >> reporter: in a wrongful death lawsuit filled with haunting details and descriptions of michael's final days, catherine jackson and michael's three children blame concert promoter aeg live for causing michael's death. they believe michael was pushed too far in rehearsals for his highly anticipated comeback tour despite his deteriorating health. in documents filed wednesday aeg is accused of taking control of michael's health after it hired conrad murray as michael's doctor, someone who was selected by, hired by, and controlled by aeg, says the suit. it goes on to claim a

national correspondent, natalie morales has been following the story. >> reporter: yes, officials in detroit suspect gusty winds and downed power lines are to blame for the fires. just the latest hardship for a city that has suffered so much heartache already. a city up in smoke. firefighters in detroit battled burning homes on tuesday, after a series of fires broke out on the city's east side. >> with the wind blowing, it starts spreading, fire after fire after fire after fire. >> reporter: powerful winds up to 50 miles per hour knocked tree branches onto power lines, sparking several of the fast-moving fires. the dangerous flames sent residents scrambling. many of the burning buildings were abandoned homes in this troubled city, but others were not, hitting those residents still living in the neighborhoods especially hard. >> i really don't have a place to go if that house burns down. and i'm going to lose everything. >> reporter: residents feared for the worst as crews responded to 85 fires in just a four-hour period. a grueling task for the city's firefighters. >> the manpower
